Staff Engineer - Materials Development

Job Description The Arconic Technology Center (ATC) is constantly inventing and innovating for the next generation of technology. Primary Purpose of the Job:
Initiating and executing aluminum product development and/or process improvement projects to deliver cost reduction and growth opportunities for Arconic.
Leading lab-scale studies and plant-scale trials to successful completion by collaborating effectively with various teams across ATC and in Business units.
Develop metallurgical expertise in heat-treatable 2xxx (including Al-Li), 6xxx & 7xxx alloys primarily for the aerospace market but also for the industrial, automotive & wheels markets.
Major Activities / Key Challenges:
Act as the ATC metallurgical lead on multi-disciplinary projects between ATC and plant locations to develop solutions for process improvement initiatives through the following: (1) Contribute to root cause analysis for material quality issues and assist plant engineers in developing and implementing solutions. (2) Provide metallurgical expertise for plant process cost reduction efforts and ensure that process changes do not adversely impact material performance. (3) Identify material performance improvement opportunities to increase recovery or to provide a differentiated product.
This position is also responsible for: (1) Serving as project manager or key contributor for new alloy/product development projects. (2) Initiating and leading lab-scale trials that are focused on developing new options for alloy processing, microstructure and property improvements. (3) Identifying and developing creative solutions to alloy and processing challenges (4) Proposing, planning, and providing technical leadership for new alloy/product development plant-scale trials. (5) Identifying opportunities to create, capture and harvest intellectual property.
Ensure completion and documentation of projects through formal reports and presentations.
Proactively manage project priorities and balance resources.
This role will require frequent travel to plant locations.
Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education:
In-depth understanding in physical and mechanical metallurgy (including fracture mechanics) of aluminum-based materials through both fundamental and applied research. Demonstrated ability to relate composition and processing effects on microstructure and properties.
Strong technical leadership and collaboration skills.
Demonstrated technical writing and presentation skills
Proven record in R&D project management skills.
Track record in delivering innovative solutions with significant value.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
Master of Science in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science from an accredited institution.
Minimum 3 years of applied R&D experience in the aluminum alloy industry
Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science
3+ years of applied R&D experience in the aluminum alloy industry
