Senior Engineer Materials Modeler

The Senior Engineer, Materials Modeler will advance Arconic's capability to model the evolution of microstructure during industrial processing, as well as connecting microstructure to properties.  Develop and deploy material models for alloy development, covering the full-range of solidification conditions: from ingot-based casting to additive manufacturing.  Models will also be applied to processing experiments that include mechanical deformation and/or heat treatment.  Package and test models in a framework which can leverage both predictive capabilities and accumulated data to more rapidly design new alloys and processes. Major Activities / Key Challenges: Develop and test computational and physics-based models relating to microstructural evolution of aluminum alloys and other metals, from casting through fabrication, including additive manufacturing. Develop and test models which connect microstructure to properties, for metals including aluminum, titanium, nickel-based and other alloy systems. Help drive the assembly of component models across different processing stages into one cohesive framework, leveraging advanced numerical toolkits to understand chained material and process models. Support efforts to include relevant data in the framework for doing material model predictions, including optimization of material properties. Provide critical assessment of experimental efforts, aimed at tuning models, and advancing the understanding of materials response. Leverage models, data, and numerical tools to provide predictions of commercial relevance, including new compositions, processing parameters, etc. Identify and submit new ideas for Intellectual Property that enables a sustainable competitive advantage for Arconic.  Participate in alloy and/or process improvement projects aimed at reducing costs, improving recovery, adding revenue, etc. working with business units and other ATC divisions as appropriate. Present results of projects to peers and plant representatives, thorough use of internal reports and presentations, invention records, patent applications and external publications and presentations. Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education: Knowledge of phase transformations, phase equilibria and precipitation reactions in multi-component phase systems. Processing/microstructure/properties relationships in aluminum and/or other metal systems. Mathematical modeling capabilities, including development, debugging and integration of source code across multiple platforms. Ability to design R&D experiments, analyze data, and identify important variables and physically significant trends. Design and post processing of technically sophisticated characterization techniques, eg. SEM, EDS/WDS, EBSD etc. Strong interpersonal skills with team members and customers, both internal and external. #LI-CB1 Qualifications Basic Qualifications Ph.D. in Materials Science/Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical or Welding Engineering from accredited institution Minimum 2 years experience with programming packages (Matlab required) and standard software applications, including Excel and statistical analysis packages (ie. JMP).  This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status.ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
